This development comes after more than 3 years of tension in the Gulf region, since July 5, 2017, against the background of Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt severing their relations with Qatar, and stopping the maritime, land and air traffic with the emirate, which the four countries accused of “supporting terrorism” and transformation. From the Arab region towards Iran, which led to a political crisis between the aforementioned countries in addition to a wide media war.
In a major breakthrough to settle this crisis, the Gulf Cooperation Council states and Egypt adopted at the summit hosted by the Saudi city of Al-Ula a statement affirming the “unity of the Gulf ranks” and laying down basic principles for resolving tension.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have reached an agreement to resume direct flights and reopen the sea and land borders.
